District Description

House District 59 spreads across seven rural counties, stretching from the Blue Ridge Mountains near Charlottesville to the hardscrabble tobacco fields in Prince Edward County . The district is so diverse that it’s difficult to find a common thread. Farming is in decline, so many farmers raise a few cattle to supplement jobs in small manufacturing plants or in nearby cities such as Lynchburg and Charlottesville . Nelson County is home to Wintergreen, a ski and golf resort nestled in the picturesque Blue Ridge . The median income is below the state average, but homeownership is at nearly 80 percent. Nearly one in three residents are African-American.

Fifty-ninth. All of Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland and Nelson Counties; part of Albemarle County comprised of the North Garden 302/Batesville 303, Porter's, and Covesville Precincts; part of Fluvanna County comprised of the Columbia and Fork Union Precincts; and part of Prince Edward County comprised of the Prospect Precinct and part of the Buffalo Heights Precinct.
